Social Services
Mahoning County Job and Family Services is in place to provide financial assistance, food stamps, medical benefits and certain other services to individuals and families who meet Federal and State eligibility guidelines in Mahoning County.
Financial assistance is provided to the following individuals who meet these guidelines:
- Families with disabled parent
- Unemployed parents
- Single parent families
- Individuals less than 18 years of age or over 60 years of age
- Pregnant women
- Persons determined disabled through the Social Security Office or County Medical Section
- Families with a one-time emergent need
Food Stamps are provided to individuals or families who meet the Federal and State eligibility guidelines.
Medical benefits are available for individuals who meet the following Federal and State eligibility guidelines:
- Age of 65 or older
- Blind individuals
- Disabled individuals
- Nursing home residents
- Children under the age of 21
- Individuals who receive financial assistance
- Individuals who lose financial eligibility because of employment
- Pregnant women
- Individuals referred by a physician
Social Services are provided to eligible individuals and families. The following services are available:
- Child care assistance
- Preventive health care program for individuals up to 21
- At-risk pregnancy services
- Transportation
- Homemaker services
- Adult protective services
How to apply for Welfare
DEPARTMENT OF JOB AND FAMILY SERVICES (MCDJFS) provides assistance to low-income individuals and families.
Applications may be submitted in person at the agency's office located at Oakhill Renaissance Place, 345 Oakhill Ave., Youngstown, Ohio 44502.
The office is open from 7:15am until 4:30pm.

- Photo ID
- Social Security card for each individual
- Proof of age, identity, and citizenship (birth certificate)
- Proof of income (pay stubs or award letter)
- Bank statements for savings and checking accounts
- Stocks, bonds, IRA's, etc.
- Life insurance policies
- Vehicle registration or title
- Rent or mortgage receipts
- Utility bills
Strengths:
There are many services in the Mahoning County that promote the health of the community. There are many resources as I listed above to help aid the individuals and families in need of financial services to get the proper care they need.
Weaknesses:
Although there are many services in the Mahoning County, there are no Social Services that pertain directly to Ellsworth and their individuals and families. The closest Welfare office is over 25 minutes away making it difficult for individuals to get there on time especially if they have families, or work during the day since the hours are only 7:15am-4:30pm.
